Proudly dubbed the “Wine Capital of Arkansas,” the city is known for its grape harvests and wine production. The city is home to several wineries and visitors frequent the town to sample the wines and enjoy festivities such as the annual “Altus Grape Festival.” Just north of town is the historic Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, also known as “Our Lady of Perpetual Help.” The Romanesque church building was built in 1902 and features its original Sistine Chapel-style paintings by a German artist, stained glass windows, bells, and a pipe organ from 1897. The beautiful structure is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The town also gained national notoriety in 2003 when the Fox reality show, “The Simple Life,” starring Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie, filmed in town.
